Since Indian fashion is my passion and business, I spend a lot of time analyzing and surveying customer’s understanding about the type of Indian outfits available in the market today. While Asian Indians are familiar with the trends in India, an American interested in buying Indian clothing has limited phrases to use to describe Indian products.

While descriptions like kids Indian clothing, kids Indian Eid dresses, kids Indian outfits are very generic, there are more specific terms that could be used to get better results and deals.

Girls Indian outfits can be categorized as follows:

1. Girls salwar kameez that have loose pants with drawstrings for the waist

2. Girls churidar suits that look like leggings and might have an elastic waist or a drawstring type waist

3. Girls Anarkali suits that have an embellished corset and a flared up body for tops ( is a trend that has been going on for the past couple of years).

4. Girls patiala suits that come with pleated salwar pants with a patch border at the bottom (This is the latest trend in Indian fashion that started less than a year ago).

5. Girls Pattu Pavadai which is a traditional south Indian outfit for girls and comes in different fabrics like silk, dupion silk, georgette etc. They usually come with a long skirt with a golden border the bottom and a matching or contrast blouse.

Boys Indian clothing on the other hand can be classified as:

1. Boys Kurta Pyjamas that come with a nehru or empire collared tops that is longer than an usual shirt and has front buttons with fancy buttons. The neckline is usually embellished with embroidery work. The pants either come as salwars which are loose or come as churidars that taper down at the bottom. These kurta pyjamas come in different flavors starting from very casual ones for daily wear to more embellished ones for special occasions.

2. Boys Sherwanis that look like kurta pyjamas but are longer than the kurta tops. They usually come with heavy work on the tops, have lining inside, are more rich looking and are usually worn for special occasions like birthdays and weddings. They might or might not be accompanied by scarfs depending on the design.

3. Boys dhoti Kurtas that have a bulged pant at the thigh area and then taper down at the bottom. These dhoti kurtas are characteristics of certain states of India and now is considered more of a fashion than a regional wear.

So whether you are searching for learning or shopping, using more specific descriptions would get you better choices and deals.

I shall soon be adding another hub on women clothing and varieties.
